Across the United States, legal protections for employees in or around the restaurant industry continue to be debated, voted on, and put into practice: from California’s FAST Recovery Act passed in September — which could raise the statewide minimum wage to $22 an hour and be adopted by other states — to the current proposed subminimum wage abolishment on the ballot in Washington, D.C. and Portland, Maine.

First, here is a breakdown of all of the worker protection proposals — many of which would directly impact the restaurant industry — that voters will be deciding on on Election Day in two weeks...

E. Coli Outbreak Linked to Wendy’s Leaves Lawsuits in Wake

An E. coli outbreak linked to The Wendy’s Co. units in six states is over, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but more than 40 of the 109 identified victims are being represented by lawyers.

At the end of 2021, a survey fielded by the National Restaurant Association showed that 78 percent of operators said their restaurants did not have enough employees to support customer demand. Understaffing is not only an economic issue, but also a food safety issue. With fewer staff, many safety and operating procedures get shorted in exchange for service expectations. This has the potential to increase risks of foodborne illnesses (FBIs).
